For many years, I moonlighted as a personal trainer. After a time, I came to understand the true nature of the trade. It was not all about pushing weight, inflicting pain, or even motivation.

During a Zoom presentation on March 10, Fran Miller of the Sunshine Coast Health Care Auxiliary announced a graduation gift of $550 to each of the 16 graduating students of Capilano University’s Health Care Assistant (HCA) program in Sechelt.

I recently visited Elphinstone resident Marion Toffan – both of us wearing masks – and enjoyed her delightful art-filled home. Born in Winnipeg, Marion was leader of an all-girl band called the Suffragettes when she was young.

When I was young, one of the largest employers in the town I lived in was the Provincial Hospital, a mental health institution that serviced the needs of the entire northern end of New Brunswick.

On 17th March 1971, 50 years ago this week, I recorded my first Sunshine Coast bird observations in a battered black notebook.

The Sunshine Coast Foundation is now accepting applicants for the Philanthropy for the 3rd Millennium program. The program, which will launch April 15, is aimed at younger workers and community leaders, approximately 25 to 50 years old.
