Scams and scam artists have become commonplace in our society.

Editor: I am writing with concern about the massive increase of coal exports proposed for Fraser Surrey docks and Neptune Terminals at Port of Vancouver. Much of that coal is thermal coal from Wyoming and other U.S. sources.

Editor: On Aug. 28, my wife visited a patient in St. Mary's Hospital. She was informed that her friend was in room 206 and, upon arrival, found that it was the wrong room 206.

Editor: Piers can be categorized into different groupings according to their principal purpose (working pier, pleasure pier, etc.).

Editor: Anyone who's been jolted by a health or other serious setback understands how such challenges bring their own set of unanticipated blessings. My eye surgeon on July 23 informed me that I had a detached retina, with other complications.

Editor: Some members of the public are quick to complain when union workers, such as school district staff, demand a middle class income. Others begrudge the pittance welfare recipients are expected to live on.

Bells will be ringing this Tuesday signaling the start of a brand new school year here on the Sunshine Coast. Hundreds of students will be heading back to class at the elementary and secondary school levels eager to learn - well, most of them anyway.
