On March 5, Lily Riggs competed at the 2019 National Powerlifting Championships in Ottawa. Riggs (pictured with her coach, Cole Thevenot of Blacksmith Fitness in Port Coquitlam) placed 7th overall in the junior 72 kg category.

On March 2, the Sunshine Coast U13 Storm hosted the South Burnaby U13 Metro Rangers for the Division 2 Cup Championship game at Hackett Park in Sechelt. As top seeded team in their group, the U13 Storm were given home field advantage.

It was a stunningly beautiful sunny weekend on March 16 and 17 in Surrey as the annual Mayors Cup filled every possible field, both turf and grass, with U7 to U17 boys and girls and a rumoured 300 teams taking part this year.

Genny Verge, winner of three gold medals at the Special Olympic World Games, is happy to be back. “It’s definitely nice to be back on Canadian soil,” said Verge from her home in Sechelt.

Adults have been flinging rubber balls at each other with competitive ferocity Monday nights in February and March at Roberts Creek Elementary School to beat the winter doldrums. On March 11, The Monstars beat more than winter.

Coast boxers Marcus Davies and Angela Canterutti trained at Boxing BC’s pre- nationals training camp in Richmond March 18 to 22 in preparation for the Canadian championships, which will take place this April in Victoria.

Four Sunshine Coast kickboxers will be heading to Calgary at the end of March to compete in the 2019 World Kickboxing and Karate Union Nationals. Ryan Daily, 42, will be competing as will Noah O’Sullivan, 19.

Last week saw the culmination of the District No. 46 elementary basketball programs, with the Grade 4/5 Jamboree, followed by the Grade 6/7 Play Days.

The 42nd annual BMO Sunshine Coast April Fool’s Run presented by Eastlink is fast approaching. Race day is Sunday, April 7 and online registration closes at midnight April 3. Walk-up registration is available April 6-7; late fees apply.

The U16 girls rep soccer team, with coaches Greg Stinson and Trina Giesbrecht, played well fought and closes matches in the Surrey Memorial Cup last weekend.
