On Wednesday, Dec. 19 the Gibsons Arena was brimming with students, teachers and staff from School District No. 46 for the annual District Student Leadership Team’s North vs. South Hockey Game Fundraiser.

On Jan. 11 a roster of Vancouver Canucks alumni will be facing off against Sunshine Coast Blues coaches, sponsors and special guests at the Gibsons arena.

ProjectSPIDER Middle Year students from School District No. 46 hit the mark at the Sunshine Coast Rod and Gun Club indoor archery range. “My class really enjoyed our sessions,” said ProjectSPIDER teacher Kaia Nielsen.

Special Olympics Sunshine Coast held their annual Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Sechelt. Over 90 people attended and Santa made an appearance bringing wonderful gifts to all the athletes.

More than 50 players came out to enjoy the fifth annual Elphinstone Alumni Basketball Tournament held on Dec. 21 and 22. A total of nine games were played over the two days and for the first time, a new team was crowned champion of the event.

A fastball field skirmish, efforts to win home game equity and appeals for ice time made sports political this year.

The access gates to Dakota Ridge remain shut as warmer temperatures and rain continue to delay the opening of the recreation area. Dakota Ridge had been anticipated to open Friday, Dec. 14, with snow accumulation reaching 30 centimetres by Dec. 11.

Freshly retired figure skating champion Patrick Chan is scheduled to perform at the Gibsons arena on March 2019 as part of the Sunshine Coast Skating Club’s (SCSC) fundraising efforts.
