Letter: SCRD directors are doing due diligence on Lockyer

LockyerRVs2
The property owner of 1220 Lockyer Road applied to allow the temporary use of RVs, but that process has come to an end.

Editor:

I’m writing in response to “Backyard RV’s are win-win” letter from May 6.

The actual issue at hand with the RV park at 1220 Lockyer Road is the non-compliant owner of the property.

To state that the SCRD directors are “callous and oblivious” is missing the mark. In fact, the owner of this property has put these unsuspecting tenants in an unfortunate situation by inviting them onto his property knowing full well that he was violating numerous bylaws, zoning and clauses in the Roberts Creek OCP. To ask for forgiveness, not permission in this case is completely irresponsible and downright cruel to the tenants who trusted his word.

It astounds me that he refers to them as “friends.”

In actuality, the SCRD directors are doing due diligence in shutting this owner down as he has had ample opportunity to bring his property up to code and has failed to do so. The proposal is to provide up to 12 months for the tenants to find a site that is actually properly set up for this sort of operation.

Affordable housing is absolutely an issue here on the Sunshine Coast, as elsewhere, but giving a free pass to non-compliant owners who choose not to follow the rules sets a dangerous precedent for others who will certainly follow.

An affordable housing plan for the Sunshine Coast is needed, with thoughtful and deliberate process followed, not owners doing their own thing at the expense of not only their local neighbourhood, but of the entire Coast.

Thank you.
