Letter: Looking for temporary housing solutions on the Sunshine Coast

Last week’s paper had a lot of good views and comments regarding our devastating eviction rate, but very few solutions. I may have a band-aid idea – for a bit anyway.

In weeks, many will be facing the streets, from seniors to single moms. Even if they find a place to store their belongings until they can find a place to rent, they are left in limbo.

We are hearing from the STRs that they are our neighbours, not commercial. I Googled AirBnB and found there are 56 units available for the entire month of June. Not one full day! While many are above many thousand a month, 17 are under $4,000. Considering there is no income to date for these units, perhaps some of the units could be offered at half the price for the month to give folks a reprieve? These people have money…just not enough!  I would think $2,000 for a $4,000 empty unit would be beneficial to all. After all we’re all neighbours.

And perhaps those of us than can, would foster their furry family members.

Maybe by July 1 we will have made some headway in softening zoning?
