Letter: We can barely afford to live on the Sunshine Coast

I see that the district is cracking down on RVs on private property. I understand there are issues, but continuing to just crack down on people and evict them without giving them any options is ridiculous.

We are in the midst of a massive, disgusting housing crisis caused by inflation and greedy people.

Landlords receive 80+ applications within hours of posting. Many renters also live in very overpriced suites (many of which the homes were bought six-plus years ago). Many suites are mold and pest infested, don’t have proper doors, have ridiculous rules set by domineering landlords and we pay $1,500+ to live in these slums.

Some who don’t understand just think the answer is to move away from the Coast. Guess what? Many of us who have to live in RVs because we were almost homeless can’t even afford to move off the Coast because it costs money that we don’t have. Our money is going to landlords to help them live their dream.

Let’s just step on the backs of people so we can have our dream houses and dream vacations and allow people to pay over 50 per cent of their income just to have a roof over their heads.

The pandemic has not made people care more about others.

If you own your own home, count yourself lucky. Some of us will likely never own a home and will never be able to retire because we have to support the lifestyle of those who own homes.

There is nowhere else to put RVs, there is nowhere else to put mobile homes.

Some of us are stuck. Most of us are hardworking people who are a benefit to our community, but we can barely afford to live.
