Hoopsters hit the hardwood

A group of hoop stars from Chatelech and Elphin-stone Secondary Schools are in Pitt Meadows this week for an intensive summer basketball camp. On Sunday, eight dedicated players from the Coast left for Pitt Meadows.

Masters in their chosen sports

A large contingent of athletes from the Sunshine Coast came home last week with great results from the World Masters Games in Edmonton. The event was held July 22 to 31.

New track record set

A new standard has been set for drag racing on the Sunshine Coast. Eric Krume from Castle-rock, Wash. set the new record at Sunday's Tremors on the Tarmac event sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association (SCDRA).

Bantams bring home gold

The Gibsons Bantam A All-stars went 6-0 in Mission last weekend, winning the 2005 provincial championship. A total of 10 teams battled it out in the scorching hot Fraser Valley for four days. First up on day one of the tournament was Duncan.

Wingfield back to lead hockey school

There will be some familiar faces taking to the ice in a few weeks at the Sunshine Coast Arena. Gibsons' native Brad Wingfield will be the lead instructor at the second annual Sunshine Coast Summer Hockey School. The school runs from Aug. 22 to 28.

Lots of cars, lots of speed

The fastest weekend of the summer starts tonight (Friday) in downtown Sechelt. The 10th annual Sleepy Hollow Rod Run, presented by the Coasters Car Club, will feature more than 300 cars. The Rod Run starts at Hackett Park at approximately 7 p.m.

Dempster picks up two wins

Gibsons' Ryan Dempster and the Chicago Cubs have a flair for the dramatic lately. Last weekend, the Cubs were in the spotlight with two games against the St. Louis Cardinals on national television in the U.S.

New course, fast times

A new course for the third annual Sea Cavalcade Mile proved to be a fast one, with Richmond's Ryan Hayden setting a new event record, clocking a blazing 4:01.

Youth take to the pitch

Youth soccer players got a chance to rub shoulders with some of the best players in the province this week. Drew Ferguson brought his Fergie's Soccer School to Gibsons this week.

Mithrush secures nationals berth

Halfmoon Bay's Blake Mithrush qualified for the national amateur championships after an 18th place finish last week in Victoria. Mithrush fired a four-round total of 295, finishing in a tie for 18th place. The top 23 finishers from the B.C.
