The SunCoast Racquet Club held the fourth annual Loretta Copping Memorial Tournament on Aug. 27 to remember one of their late members with an exciting round robin.

Play began at the Hackett Park public courts, with everyone playing two sets. The venue then moved to Marian and Scott Shoemaker's court in Middlepoint to finish the tourney with everyone playing another set.

The winner of the ladies event was Judi Lees, while Anne Elliott and Laurie Reid tied for second place. With the absence of their courts at the Wakefield Bubble, the men were included this year to bring the club together. Fred Carter came in first with Doug Reid of Tillicum Bay coming in second.

Thankfully the good weather held up, the public courts remained open and all went well for a successful tourney. Thanks also to Marian and Scott Shoemaker for the venue and everyone who brought scrumptious food. The SunCoast Racquet Club embraces the notion of expanding tennis to the broader community.

We believe that tennis is a healthy, all-season social sport that should be enjoyed by our expanding community. Covered courts are being constructed throughout B.C. and operated year-round, to accommodate the recreational needs of their residents. We want our community to enjoy the benefits of such a facility and will support a public facility through our membership activities.

The goal is to enhance the lives of the Sunshine CoastÊcommunity by providing a permanent, accessible year-round tennis sport facility that will encourage participation by a diverse mix of people of all ages and socio-economic levels. The SunCoast Racquet Club is currently working to make a reality of the new tennis facility at the arena site. We have begun to raise funds and increase memberships to this end. We still have a long way to go so anyone interested in helping with a tax deductible donation or help in anyway please contact Cam Forrester at 604-885-7112 for more information.
