Editor: Some members of the public are quick to complain when union workers, such as school district staff, demand a middle class income. Others begrudge the pittance welfare recipients are expected to live on.

Bells will be ringing this Tuesday signaling the start of a brand new school year here on the Sunshine Coast. Hundreds of students will be heading back to class at the elementary and secondary school levels eager to learn - well, most of them anyway.

Editor: You should always use archival inks and paper when you print your own photos to preserve your precious digital photographs. Otherwise, your very important photos might fade or the paper will break down in a few years.

I suspect if ever there is a survey done about the most unsuccessful measure ever undertaken in Canada it would likely be the conversion to metric measurement in the 1970s. Hands up if you still measure your height in feet and inches. I rest my case.

Editor: Dean Clement's letter (Coast Reporter, Aug. 23) asks why those who've accepted BC Hydro's contention that smart meters are safe and cost effective should pay extra to accommodate those of us who've decided to not accept one of these devices.

Editor: On Wednesday evening, Aug. 21, after a day with my grandson on the water tending a crab pot, I had to dash off to a meeting in Sechelt, still with my inflatable in the back of my truck.

Editor: Few Sunshine Coast residents are aware of a new threat to our health and environment. Lafarge has applied to the province to significantly increase the trans-shipment of coal from its Texada Island facilities.

Editor: The end of summer is upon us, and with it reduced numbers of tourists. But thinning tourist crowds reveal a population that builds as the cooler weather approaches: the homeless.

Editor: Last Wednesday, Aug. 21, my wife and I travelled on the 12:30 p.m. ferry from Langdale. On the way my wife felt ill and passed out in the coffee shop.

It has been quite the week for BC Ferries - especially here on the Sunshine Coast.
