The power of women working together

Canadian Federation Of University Women

Since being established on the Sunshine Coast in 1986, the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has functioned as a local service and social club where thoughtful women can share ideas, interests and hospitality in a friendly environment.

As a service organization, CFUW Sunshine Coast is committed to pursuit of knowledge, promotion of education, improvement of the status of women and human rights, and active participation in public affairs.

Thanks to the club’s fundraising events last year, the CFUW Sunshine Coast bursary fund was once again able to award bursaries to several local women upgrading their education at a post-secondary level.

Happily, it is not all work and no play. As a social club, CFUW Sunshine Coast boasts several lively interest groups that promote fun and friendship, and include reading, bridge, gourmet dining, wine tasting, travel and walking groups.

The club is always open to suggestions for new interest groups as new members join and interests evolve. Several times a year there are gatherings just for fun, such as the Christmas luncheon and the Mad Hatters Tea Party.

This fall they begin the season with an open house/membership event. Anyone considering membership or just interested in seeing what the CFUW Sunshine Coast is about is most welcome to join. No university degree is necessary, just an affinity with CFUW philosophy and pursuits. The open house is set for Monday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. at St. John’s United Church, 5085 Davis Bay Rd., Davis Bay.

Entertainment will feature the wonderful versatile vocalist Brenda Nestegaard Paul, a retired musical theatre performer, accompanied by local pianists Ken Dalgleish and Katherine Hume. The program will include a variety of jazzy and musical theatre selections, and a few surprises. Following the performance, enjoy the CFUW interest group displays and refreshments.
