The Sunshine Coast Equestrian Centre (SCEC) in Roberts Creek will be hopping Saturday with the annual Ted Bowie Memorial Barrel Race and Calcutta Auction.

The SCEC, the Coast's local, community horse club, promotes horsemanship and encourages and teaches equestrian activities. Each year the association runs this event in honour of Bowie, well-known local horseman and equestrian friend who encouraged many people of all ages to come out to enjoy riding and share his love for the horses.

The equestrian centre is located up the B&K logging road in Roberts Creek. The club is making this a family-fun event with great food, a chili tasting contest sponsored by the Blackfish Pub, rodeo riding and fun kids games sponsored by the Calvary Baptist Church. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the riding events starting at noon.

All proceeds from the kids games will be forwarded to a non-profit organization called Erma Fennel Foundation that will oversee the purchases of expenditures to help rebuild a home in Mexico for a family who lost their house in a fire.

Last year a team of 14 from the Coast went down to build a small home for a needy family of eight, including grandparents and their six grandchildren. Just about two months ago, a disaster struck this family, as a fire took everything.

Two of the children got out safely, but the other two were severely burned and are in a burn unit in Los Angeles. The grandparents were hospitalized locally and are now in the process of picking up the pieces and rebuilding their lives and a new house. The government has provided brick for the walls and friends have rallied and done the cement work. Four walls now stand.

This is where the Calvary Baptist Church would like to continue to fundraise to cover the costs of all other building supplies needed, any labour and simple furnishings and hopefully extra personal items/clothing. The Calvary Baptist Church will be at the Ted Bowie event to help raise money for this worthy cause.
