Popsicle stick bridges

Building Competition

Matt Atkinson was one of 64 teams (some individual, some family) who participated in the fifth annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Competition in Sechelt on Sunday, March 29.

Teams built bridges out of Popsicle sticks, glue, and dental floss. The bridges were then crushed by a machine that measures how much force it took to break the bridge.

This year Ezra and Kurt Vernon, who placed first in the family category, built a bridge that stood up to 1,945 newtons of pressure. That’s almost 200 kg of force — two grown men could have stood on that bridge.
