Joe Gonsalves (‘Portuguese Joe No. 3’) founded Madeira Park in 1904, establishing its business infrastructure and naming it after the island of Madeira. Our community has many family members living here today. The Madeira Park we know and love would not be what it is without Gonsalves’ commitment.

The deadline for communication on the proposed name change for Madeira Park to Salalus has been extended to Aug. 28. Currently online shopping is an easy way to purchase many things. Remember we have fantastic small businesses and artists that are not to be forgotten in these unusual times. Some may now have online offerings but if not give them a call. Porch pickups and delivery are a great way to complete your purchase.

You can shop online at local favourite The Bargain Barn, where there are over 130 items for sale, including some very rare collectibles (see www.ebay.ca/sch/bargethrif0). Proceeds go to the Pender Harbour Health Centre. And visit bargainbarnpender.weebly.com to keep up-to-date with all good things going on with The Barn. The hardworking volunteers never stop.

Another treasure, The Harbour Gallery, has a Facebook page where you can shop the fine works of local artists. The presentations are amazing. You can purchase a work of art to enjoy now and forever.

Thank you to our heroic frontline health and service people, the volunteers reaching out to help others, those spending endless hours at their sewing machines, and the fine musicians performing live daily. We must appreciate and support them. Abide by the government regulations. Care and kindness must prevail.
