The Sunshine Coast branch of the BC SPCA is inviting the community to an animal-themed day of fun on Saturday, May 25 at its annual open house from 1 to 4 p.m. at the shelter at 4376 Solar Road in Wilson Creek.

Highlights of the open house include educational displays, shelter tours and an ask-a-vet booth. In addition to a day of activities for the whole family, the branch will promote the joy of pet guardianship over the weekend, May 24 to 26, with half-price adoption fees on all cats, kittens and rabbits.

"We're also asking members of the community to help animals in need by dropping off urgently needed items for the shelter," said Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA. "Wish list items include cans of Hill's brand wet cat and dog food, red or black KONG dog toys, patio umbrellas (to help shade the dogs when they are playing outside during the summer), radios and CD players and smooth peanut butter. The Sunshine Coast Bbranch is also in need of a few digital cameras if anyone in the community is able to help with that need."

Chortyk said the open house event is an opportunity for people to meet the animals available for adoption and to have fun learning more about how to help animals in the community.

The BC SPCA adopts more than 16,000 animals each year through its 36 branches. All animals adopted from the BC SPCA are vet-checked, vaccinated and altered (spayed or neutered), and assessed for temperament.
