Have you ever wondered what it's like to ride on a hospital stretcher? If so, here's your chance to find out.

In an effort to raise funds for equipment for the new hospital expansion, the staff and physicians of St. Mary's Hospital and local community members will hold bed races at noon on Sept. 13 in the Trail Bay Mall parking lot.

For an entrance fee of $40 per person or $200 per team and T-shirts to mark the occasion, 16 five-member teams will compete, concluding the event with dinner at the Lighthouse Pub.

Registration starts Aug. 1, and forms may be picked up at hospital admitting department. Teams will be accepted on a first paid basis, and only 16 teams are eligible to compete.

Teams will be encouraged to seek sponsorship from local businesses as well as individual donations from the community; tax receipts will be issued for donations of $25 or more. The top fundraising teams in both the sponsorship and individual donation categories will win prizes, with all monies raised for the hospital foundation. The funds will support the purchase of equipment and furnishings for the new hospital.

Each team will be eligible to participate in at least two races, and prizes will be awarded to the overall winners and the team that shows the most "spirit."
