Halfmoon Happenings

HALFMOON BAY

Garlic is in season and there will be a garlic contest at this year’s Halfmoon Bay Country Fair.

There will be prizes for the most beautiful head, for the greatest scape.

What is a garlic scape you ask? Well, that was my question to Bev Gidora of Gidora Gardens on Redrooffs Road. They are the deep-green stalks that grow from garlic bulbs. They have a distinct garlic flavour, though not as strong as the bulb.

If you grow your own garlic save your most beautiful bulb for the fair.

The Gidora Farm garlic contest will be looking for anything — garlic recipes, paintings, drawings, and pottery — so be creative and bring it to the Fair this July.

Mary Beth Knechtel would like to thank Broom Busters for a productive day last week. This invasive weed, recognized easily by its bright yellow flower, competes strongly against various native plant species. Six Busters turned out and managed to do a good sweep of Redrooffs, so it looks pretty broom-free. Others have been doing some busting in their own neighbourhoods on their own time, so thanks to them too.

The regular meeting of the Halfmoon Bay branch of St. Mary's Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary is this Monday June 9, at 9:45 a.m. at Cooper's Green Hall. Visitors and new members welcome. Check out their website at http://www.stmarysauxiliary.com/ for more details.

The Welcome Beach Community Association is hosting its annual general meeting on Wednesday, June 25 at Coopers Green Hall, so mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Painters are still required for a one-hour workshop to help re-paint the kids’ games for the upcoming Country Fair.
