Data sought for eagle nest registry

Community Mapping Network

In optimum conditions the territory of a bald eagle pair can extend a half kilometre radius beyond their nest, and sometimes territories include two or three nests.

More than 40 people attended Ian Moul’s informative presentation on the bald eagle and osprey nest registry program on Sept. 11 to learn of the bird’s biology and conservation issues. The successful event was co-hosted by the Tetrahedron Outdoor Club and the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association. Enthusiastic response prior to and after the event provided Moul with enough leads to visit and record eight local bald eagle nest sites. This data will soon be posted on the community mapping network (www.cmbc.ca), more than tripling the number presently recorded for the Sunshine Coast.

Efforts are now underway to secure funding for a pilot project to observe and record additional nests. Anyone interested in participating in this project is asked to record their observations of their local nest with details such as how many years the nest has been in use, and the number of chicks raised each year. Those wishing to forward their information now or to become more actively involved in the proposed project can email [email protected] or call 604-886-8441.
