Conference: it’s all about the children

Exploration and Discovery 2015

On Oct. 17, parents and caregivers will get together to learn, to socialize, to explore and to talk about children at this year’s Exploration and Discovery, the Early Learning and Child Care Conference offered through Sunshine Coast Child Care Resource and Referral (CCRR).

From the keynote speaker to the workshops offered throughout the day, it’s all about the children.

Rebecca Mitchell, a registered clinical counsellor with The Wishing Star clinic, will deliver this year’s keynote. She will talk about self-regulation, helping the big people to understand their role in the development of self-regulation in little people.

Each year, with eight amazing workshops offered to spark enthusiasm, learning and creativity, participants are hard-pressed to choose only two. This year, workshop options include: how to create a culturally relevant curriculum, responding to challenging behaviour, how light and shadow can be used as powerful teaching tools, bringing felt stories to life, answers to why he/she can’t sit still, practical ideas to help children keep that beat, bringing stories to life with art materials, and tools to prevent bully culture in the child care setting.

These learning opportunities, a delicious lunch and time to connect with colleagues and friends and visit the display tables make for a great day for the 80 or so individuals who come from the Sunshine Coast, Squamish and Powell River to the conference to learn more about children.

Exploration and Dis-covery will be held at Chat-elech Secondary School in Sechelt on Saturday, Oct. 17. For more information about the conference or to register, contact the Sechelt CCRR office at 604-885-5657.

CCRR is a program of Sunshine Coast Community Services Society.
