Psychiatrist David Kirkpatrick, who practises a combination of community mental health and outpatient psychotherapy in West Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast, kicks off a tour of the Pacific North-west at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m.

Kirkpatrick, a part-time resident of the Sunshine Coast for 15 years (who works one day a week with the Sunshine Coast Mental Health team as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist) will be celebrating the release of his first book, In Praise of Strong Women: A Psychiatrist's Memoir. His tour will include appearances in Ashland, Medford, Corvalis and Salem, Oregon.

In Praise of Strong Women is a moving tribute to the strong girls and women in his life, including his wife, Dr. Clair Hawes, a strong and loving woman and a well-respected psychologist who practiced in West Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast for more than 30 years.

Woven between his memories and anecdotes about the strong women in his life, Kirkpatrick offers a unique perspective about the relationships between strong women and those who love them. With insight derived from many years as an individual and couples counsellor, he explores with the reader the attraction of many men to strong women, describes the unique characteristics of these special women and offers advice about how to appreciate, enjoy and benefit from their special gifts. He also reveals how the tragic loss of his wife Betsy in Oregon helped make him a stronger person and gave him a greater appreciation of life and love.

In Praise of Strong Women is available at Talewind Books in Sechelt. Additional information about the book and the author can be found at www.granvilleislandpublishing.com.
