Meet District of Sechelt candidate John Henderson

The following is a Q&A that was distributed to all District of Sechelt candidates.

Candidate name

John Henderson

Age

67

Occupation (s)

45yrs business & entrepreneur

Which position are you running for?

Mayor

Live in Sechelt? For how long?

Full time for ~20 yrs

If not incumbent, list related municipal committee / civic group experience.

Mayor 2011-14; Chair, Sechelt Chamber; Co-founder, SC Electric Vehicle Assn; Member-Highway Society, and lots more!

What are your priorities if elected?

1.  Water; 2.  Housing for all; 3.  Deliver better value for your tax dollars; 4.  A vibrant safe community; 5.  A tireless advocate, FOR SECHELT

Should Sechelt facilitate creation of more affordable housing? How?

Yes, we urgently need many things – adequate water, to support sensible growth, to attract people to make Sechelt their home, to provide the services we need. I have specific ideas on how to deliver affordable housing.

Should Sechelt prepare for climate change? If so how?

In 2021, I organized a Sea Level Rise symposium including national experts that considered solutions for Sechelt. As mayor, I will build on this to deliver the resilience we need.

Is Sechelt managing growth appropriately?

NO! We need LOTS of housing – focused on lower cost, rentals, seniors and more. To deliver, we need to attract the best designers and builders. For that, we need a system that rewards innovation and guarantees predictable approval processes.

How would you balance pushback on development with need for housing?

Sechelt is OUT OF BALANCE. As an older community, we lack (mostly younger) people to deliver the services we need.  Growth targeted to "REBALANCE" our community will make us a more vibrant, inclusive and safe community.

What is the greatest infrastructure challenge facing Sechelt?

Water supply – which I will fix within two years.  We also need two ferries and a real highway (and we can afford both.) (Ask me for details)

What do you wish we'd asked you?

Why are so many projects "in process" yet so little has been finished in the last four or more years?
