Watch: District of Sechelt candidate Tim Horner

Meet District of Sechelt candidate Tim Horner

The following is a Q&A that was distributed to all District of Sechelt candidates.

Candidate name

Tim Horner

Age

43

Occupation (s)

Owner/principal, West Coast Measuring.

Which position are you running for?

Councillor

Live in Sechelt? For how long?

Yes. 3 years

What are your priorities if elected?

Advocating for long-term water solutions, housing affordability, and better transportation options. Updating the OCP. Being proactive toward mitigating effects of climate change on our community.

Should Sechelt facilitate creation of more affordable housing? How?

Absolutely. By advocating more support from the provincial and federal government. Further, we can review/revise our Zoning Bylaw and OCP to allow more infill, laneways, secondarysuites, etc... And possibly mandate new developments to have a minimum number of non-market rentals.

Should Sechelt prepare for climate change? If so how?

Yes, of course. Research suggests climate change is happening on a global scale. We need to adapt quickly and efficiently to ensure the effects are minimized as much as possible.

Is Sechelt managing growth appropriately?

Yes, our current council has managed growth according to our existing zoning bylaws and OCP. However, we need more focus on balancing transportation and affordability, which require effective advocacy for action from higher governments. Attracting business should also be prioritized.

How would you balance pushback on development with need for housing?

Many municipalities in B.C. require developers to provide a percentage of new housing at non-market rental rate in perpetuity. Perhaps this is a feasible option for Sechelt – but must be implemented cautiously to not dissuade developers from investing here.

What is the greatest infrastructure challenge facing Sechelt?

Water. The SCRD has done excellent work on a short term solution – we must advocate for them to now focus on the long term, which starts with volumetric metering.

What do you wish we'd asked you?

Why are you running for council? To be an integral part in making proactive decisions and ensuring our community is the best it can be.
