Youth baseball returning to Coast for the summer

As with most sports, it will look a little different, but the Sunshine Coast Baseball Association is gearing up for a late season start for its youth league.

“The fields are not open to league play yet, but it is strongly anticipated and expected they will be open before the end of July,” said association president Andrew Appleton in an email to members.

The association’s board has put together a “safe and comprehensive return-to-play plan” and have worked with the Sunshine Coast Regional District, Town of Gibsons and the province “to bring baseball back to the Sunshine Coast this summer.”

Since safe distance protocols are easily maintained, Appleton described baseball as one of the safest sports to play during the COVID-19 crisis.

The shortened season will run for five weeks starting mid-August and registration fees will be half price, but no refunds will be offered if the association is forced to cancel the season due to tighter COVID-19 restrictions.

All players are invited to register.

“We won’t deny anyone who wants to play, regardless of team or division availability. We will find a meaningful place for you to develop your skills and improve your play,” said Appleton.

“I urge you to consider baseball for your child as part of a healthy way to stay active during these crazy times.”

Registration runs from July 8 to July 31. Information and registration can be accessed at
