Volleyball

Congratulations are in order for four athletes from Elphinstone Secondary School.

Bella Roeleveld (Grade 8), Michelle Jakszuk (Grade 9), Katrina Nanson (Grade 10), and Farron MacDonald (Grade 10) all participated in the volleyball Team B.C. tryouts at Harold Jerome on May 30 and all were accepted to compete for the Baden Cup.

The Baden Cup is a high performance, invitation only, development camp and tournament designed to introduce athletes to the Team B.C. program, and provide an opportunity for the top athletes in the province to train together.

It's quite impressive that these four made it, considering how many girls were at Harold Jerome for the tryouts.

Baseball

Gibsons' Ryan Dempster has had an up-and-down few weeks, much like his Chicago Cubs' teamates.

Dempster currently sits with a 4-3 record with a win and a loss and a pair of no decisions in his last four starts. Dempster was fantastic on May 30 in a 7-0 home shut-out of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitching seven innings, allowing only three hits while striking out five. His loss came on May 20, where he fell 2-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals despite pitching seven innings. He was roughed up on May 25 only lasting four innings in a 10-8 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates where he yielded six runs on seven hits. He pitched well on June 6, his last start, but lost 4-3 to the Cincinnati Reds. He went six innings and allowed three runs, but all three were unearned as the defence let him down committing a pair of errors behind him.

The Cubs sit with a record of 26-26 and third in the National League Central Division before entering play Tuesday night. Dempster was slated to start last night (Thursday) against the Houston Astros past press deadline.
