The exponential growth of pickleball is resulting in a growing number of conversions of tennis courts to pickleball. South of the line in California, Palm Desert Resort began this initiative in 2019 when three of the resort’s 14 tennis courts became 12 pickleball courts. The conversion led to Coachella Valley Grand Prix Pickleball, the premier tournament series in the desert.

Recently, Lin Buckler of the Sunshine Coast entered the inaugural tournament in the 50+ 4.0 level category. With fellow Canadian Anna Edgar of Nanaimo, they won the Gold medal.

On the Coast, pickleball is underway at both arenas. Saturday, May 11 marks the official opening at Sechelt’s arena from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. In addition to social and competitive play on nine courts, there will be a fun skills competition, a mini dinking tournament, a singles demonstration, and a paddle (racquet) and apparel door prize raffle.

This event is free for Sunshine Coast Pickleball members. Non-members are encouraged to join in the fun at the regular drop-in cost of $4. Club ambassadors will be on hand to welcome new players of all ages and assist them in learning the basics of the fastest growing sport in the world. Information on pickleball, club membership and play schedules can be found at www.sunshinecoastpickleball.com.
