I am not normally a political activist, but I want people to know why teachers are taking a stand with this government.

The Liberal government slashed spending to schools. We have lost counsellors, child support workers, special education teachers, and teacher librarians. Libraries are closed and course selection is limited. Our class sizes can range from 24 to 32 students. Split classes in the elementary schoolsare an overwhelming majority. Over crowding in science labs and workshops is dangerous.

The bill for special needs students has not been adhered to, and often there are more than three special needs students per class.

The government should abide by the court ruling and provide the money to make this happen.

As my 11-year-old said, "If we have smaller class sizes, then my teacher can call on my hand more often."

Bill 22 is being pushed through which can strip our contracts, impose class size and not allow us to have a voice. We have to watch out for a government, which creates laws to suit their needs and not the needs of the people. Restricting us to a demonstration line as opposed to a full strike is insulting, and does not allow other unions to create the solidarity we need to keep democracy working in this province.

This government is trying to frighten us with outrageous fines ($475 a day) if we want to stand up to them.

My position is democracy not dictatorship, negotiate over legislate and put ourchildren's public education ahead of frivolous spending by this government. I urge you to oppose Bill 22 and contact your MLA, Premier Christy Clark, Education Minister George Abbott, and Lieutenant Governor Steven Point.
