I’m a local octogenarian who intends to leave the party before I’m unable to care for myself. But those who choose to stay are entitled to receive the best of comfort and care as they live out their final years.
The COVID-19 pandemic has only made abundantly clear what a lot of us had realized before: that the for-profit model of long-term care is totally inadequate to provide the quality of care needed.
When the bottom line is to make the most amount of money for the shareholders, corners are cut that affect both the residents and the staff who are willing and able to care for them.
The community of the Sunshine Coast has made it abundantly clear – by forming committees, attending meetings, signing petitions, and sending letters to the editor – that we do not want this kind of care here.
And yet, the Trellis/Silverstone project is still planning to go ahead.
Where are the people we have voted to represent us in all this? What has happened to democracy when the will of the majority of the people is totally ignored?
