I was among the thousands caught up in the closure of the coast highway this past Sunday. The tragic accident that was the cause took place at the west intersection of the highway and Redrooffs Road. Many have commented on the need for a merge lane or traffic light –– as many accidents have occurred there.
But I wanted to comment on the sense of community among those who were lined up. We knew something bad had happened and shared with others the latest updates. I chose to walk up and down the line of cars and enquire about the situation. I saw families, campers returning after a perfect summer weekend, tourists (a full bus load!) and off-work employees heading home for Monday restarts –– whether somewhere on the Coast or on the mainland. To a person, everyone was accepting in some way of the delay, especially after learning of the severity of the incident. I traded my popcorn for water, saw campers get out gear to make something to eat, and chatted amiably with many. There was a woman offering her nearby home for a washroom, a local man going up the line to offer snacks, and offers of charging mobile devices if needed. It was a friendly, calm atmosphere in my section, for the most part.
After six-plus hours we finally got to roll and head to home or a ferry.
It became very dark on that part of the road, and the stars were spectacular. I’m grateful for the spirit of my fellow travellers.
