What gives B.C. Ferries?

The following letter was sent to B.C. Ferries and copied to Coast Reporter. I took a soccer team from the Sunshine Coast to Surrey to play in the Surrey Mayors Cup during the March 16 weekend.

I took a soccer team from the Sunshine Coast to Surrey to play in the Surrey Mayors Cup during the March 16 weekend.

The team was made up of 17-year-old girls from up and down the Coast who had had only one practice together. Some had never played off-Coast at this high level before. The odds were not in their favour.

They won the tourney and were thrilled. They could not wait to get on the ferry with their trophy and medallions and begin to share this victory with the small community they live in.

When they asked if an announcement could be made, they were informed the captain had to OK it. No announcement came, and when we inquired, I was told it was policy not to make personal announcements over the intercom.

Are you kidding me? I take the ferry five days a week, six times on sports weekends. There is not an overwhelming number of personal messages over the intercom.

Forgive me, but what person decided he/she needed to rein things in because public announcements were getting out of control on the Langdale route? Can they call me and explain? Is this a safety issue?
