WestJet junket seems wasteful

Editor: Reading about Mayor Henderson's proposed trip to Calgary to try to woo WestJet to come to the Sunshine Coast seems to me like a huge waste of our tax dollars, even if WestJet is paying for the airfare (Coast Reporter, June 15).

Reading about Mayor Henderson's proposed trip to Calgary to try to woo WestJet to come to the Sunshine Coast seems to me like a huge waste of our tax dollars, even if WestJet is paying for the airfare (Coast Reporter, June 15).

Trying to fill a 72-seat turboprop to break even load factor, at least once per day, will be next to impossible at best or the likes of Tofino Air or West Coast Air would have been running larger aircraft long ago.

The infrastructure needed to support these aircraft and the need for security screening equipment is extremely expensive. And these would definitely be required as any and all possible destinations are all secure airports and require pre-screening of any flight operating into them.

I hope my vote for Mayor Henderson was not a waste for our future. The efficient use of my tax dollars for frivolous business trips when he himself says "WestJet is not coming to Sechelt anytime soon" certainly seems like a waste to me.
