Re: Jancis Andrews asking council to offer a citizen of distinction award (Coast Reporter, Aug. 24)

It seems she missed Coast Reporter's April 20, 2012 coverage of the biannual event, Celebration of Excellence, in which not one man or woman was singled out for appreciation by the community, but 18 outstanding individuals who volunteer their time and energy to bring about cultural and environmental events and services that enhance the quality of life of all citizens in the area.

What more recognition is required than this?

The Gibsons Golden Girl award, by comparison, seems to miss the point of the tremendous amount of work many outstanding individuals give to the community. Selecting one or two individuals for a "distinction award" ignores the acknowledgement granted to the many outstanding volunteers who give of their time and energy to community life.
