Congratulations to the good souls responsible for busting the Scotch broom near the Highway 101 development in Sechelt. Cutting down this invasive plant will give native species and cultivated plants a chance to grow. Keep in mind that broom puts chemicals into the soil that stunt the root growth of other plants - thus its huge success. It also produces multiple seeds that spray out and can stay dormant for years.
Broom Busters on Redrooffs Road are joining forces with the Halfmoon Bay Elementary School kids on May 2 to clean up Connor Park and Welcome Woods. Others neighbourhoods are picking up the idea and starting their own groups to eradicate Broom within their reach. Small group action can have a big effect. For example, Sargeants Bay Park and wetlands is broom-free because a small group of volunteers worked at it for a few years.
Happy broom-busting all.
