The following letter was sent to Sechelt council and copied to Coast Reporter
I was distressed to read recent letters (Coast Reporter, Aug. 24) attacking Shirley Kuciuk for exercising her rights in a free society. The letters seemed to go much further and suggest that all citizens prior to very recent times were against business, against any housing, against any planning, against any changes in anything,
Of course, that is ridiculous.
The Target matter involves infringements on residentially zoned property that residents counted upon when they bought their homes to live in peace.
Target suggests they are only going to harvest caviar in a quiet building sheltered from the world when in fact they have applied for the right to process the leftovers of the sturgeon: meat, heads, and organs, then truck it.
Now it seems that anything that was ever put into the very recently adopted official community plan is fair game and specifically the urban containment boundaries. But for one, all of council was mute or supportive when it was proposed that the boundaries should be ignored and possibly done away with to accommodate, for starters, another outlying development which has other serious draw backs anyway. Major reasons for the boundaries was to save the taxpayers from the high costs of far flung infrastructure when there is property close in lying vacant and to consider the environmental costs of more driving to remote subdivisions. Those don't count now?
"Citizens" screaming about high taxes, don't you get it? It is not the Kuciuks of this world who are costing you; it is the failure to stick to a good plan developed by "citizens". Attack that!
