Speak up this is our coast

And so it begins. Enbridge quietly submitted their application for the Northern Gateway pipeline on Thursday, May 27, which suggests they believe, even in the wake of the Gulf Coast disaster, they will receive the green light for oil tankers in the Inside Passage and the inland coastal waters of Kitimat.

I have to admit I was surprised by the arrogance to ignore public angst over the Gulf disaster and submit their applicationnow.

Enbridge boldly states in their submission that the chances of a oil spill from VLC crude oil tankers is one in 10,000 years. Rather than insult my intelligence, present facts not fantasy. Just maybe, they should have talked to B.C. Ferries about the tragic sinking of the Queen of the North in 2006. That would be one in 46 years ignoring all other serious incidents in the history of our ferry service.

The Exxon Valdez incident remains a dark warning to people who live all along our B.C. coast how vulnerable our seaside life is to outside corporations that deal with extreme risk based on misinformation.

The First Nation of Haida Gwaii and the entire pipeline inland route of aboriginal peoples need our help.

Make no mistake, the government of Canada is in the driver's seat on this serious matter. Christian Paradis, Jim Prentice have both made very conflicting statements over the oil tanker moratorium in B.C. I implore all British Columbians to speak up.

This is our coast - please defend our right to stopoil tanker traffic in B.C.
