Saddened by fawns’ fate

Re: “Orphaned fawns rescued in Roberts Creek,” May 29.

While my heart was uplifted at the sight of these two fawns being rescued, it sank with the knowledge they are going to be used for training in films with the company Beyond Bears. They will spend their life there, according to Coast Reporter.

Having volunteered with Gibsons Wildlife Rehab Centre, I know there are stringent regulations regarding wildlife rescue, specifically releasing them to anywhere but their natural habitat.

My question is: How did our “conservation” officers come into this agreement with Beyond Bears, an apparent commercial operation? The usual procedure would be to send the fawns to a Wildlife Rescue Centre in Langley, if Gibsons Wildlife couldn’t accommodate them. They would eventually be released back into the wild. Is this setting a precedent for future rescued wildlife? Does it conform with wildlife rescue regulations? How did Beyond Bears get involved? And what do we know about them?

I think the public has a right to know and I think these fawns deserve their natural habitat.

Very concerned, very sad.
