I really do think my member of Parliament is a decent guy, but he always disappoints.
In the case of the temporary foreign workers (TFW) program, a Liberal motion was submitted to study in committee. John Weston stood in the House of Commons on April 16 and voted against it, as did all his party colleagues.
Either Weston thinks there is nothing wrong with the program or he is afraid to go against the Prime Minister's Office. The problem is something is wrong with the program when we see what happened at RBC with their IT department.
As a former IT professional, I know outsourcing isn't new; it has been happening since the early 1990s. What is new is insourcing. To explain the RBC issue, Canadian jobs aren't been shipped offshore; Canadians are being replaced by temporary foreign workers in their own country in their workplace.
I have no problem with temporary foreign workers being brought to Canada to fill gaps in areas where the unemployment rate is low and business cannot find workers to fill the labour need.
However, the Conservative government prefers to encourage business to insource rather than maintain a Canadian or landed immigrant in their workforce. This is not a job creation program. It is a race to the bottom for the middle class.
If business continues the TFW insource program without oversight, what will Weston say to his constituents? "Sorry I don't believe in supporting the Canadian middle class. I only support my wealthy constituents?" I believe Weston is as dismayed by the insourcing program as I am.
He should show some metal and start speaking up about the TFW program -it's never too late to represent your entire riding. I look forward to Weston's response.
