The following letter was sent to member of Parliament John Weston and copied to Coast Reporter.
I am writing to let you know my indignation at this covert attempt to use the omnibus budget Bill C-38 to annihilate the years of progress Canada has made on environmental protection. It's bad enough that the bill destroys the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. Worse still, the Tories are proposing to weaken the following safeguards against total environmental collapse: the Energy Board Act, the Fisheries Act, the Nuclear Safety Control Act, the Navigable Waters Protection Act and the Species at Risk Act.
Our natural resources are precious and need to be maintained for future generations of Canadians and not sold off to ensure quick trade and exploitation by private industry.
For the sake of our children and the environment, I ask you to demand the non-budget matters - all environmental changes - be removed from C-38 and put forward as stand-alone legislation. This bill needs to be debated in the House of Commons. Your constituents need to be made aware of the changes your party is proposing to the federal protection measures of our planet.
