More user-friendly rec facilities

I have been very involved with recreation on the Coast since I began teaching here in 1970. We've come a long way from the days when we ball players used to have to do all the field maintenance ourselves.

With the additions of new playing fields, our little community has nearly caught up to many other communities I've visited, around the province.

In 2012, I can almost "brag" about our amenities here now.

As a director of Kidsport I had the pleasure of working with employees from the Credit Union who organized the best outdoor event I've attended on the Coast.

As well as a host of other corporate sponsors, the Movie in the Park night on Aug. 16 at Hackett was a superb family evening attended by more than 1,200 people.

Perry Schmidt and the District of Sechelt staff made sure the grass was comfortable, the washrooms opened and maintained. They assured us the sprinklers wouldn't come on at 10 p.m. (they didn't) and that we had easy access to power.

The weekend previous, I was involved in umpiring the local fastball playoffs at Brothers Park. On the Saturday, there were no change rooms or washrooms available. The beautiful new building at the field was double-locked tight. I changed in my car, and had to go across to the rec centre to use the washrooms, and re-fill my water bottle.

On Sunday, the finals, and a good crowd on hand to watch on a blistering hot day, I again had to change in my car. Between the two final games, I desperately need to use the washroom, the rec centre doors locked, as well as the washrooms at the park. Surely one player from the league could have been entrusted with a key to the toilets?

I'm curious, why have those facilities, if they can't be used?
