Letters: Chains are needed if heading up to Dakota Ridge

At the foot of the road to Dakota Ridge there is a sign that states “Must carry chains.”

At kilometre one, kilometre two, and kilometre three, there are similar signs. So why do people insist on seeing how far they can get without chains? Yes, you may get up to the top and go skiing, snowshoeing or sledding for the day but you can’t get down safely without chains.

This was evident on Christmas Eve when several vehicles became stuck or damaged on the kilometre seven hill. An annual event it seems.

Lucky for them, an NB Contracting grader was close by and spent hours clearing the mess. This is not something in his contract. And he certainly won’t be there next time. A regular tow truck will cost you upward of $400. Chains will cost $150.

I passed a newer Dodge pickup on the way down on Boxing Day. Just at the bottom of the big hill he slid into a tree. No chains. Serious damage. A lot more than $150 worth.
