Editor:
What a great idea Paul Harris Jones presented in his letter “A National Park Next" published in last week’s Coast Reporter: a big nationally protected area on the Sunshine Coast encompassing all the old-growth already designated as worthy of protection by the BC Forest Service as well as adjacent marine inlets to truly protect our fabulous natural heritage and preserve a blueprint to re-establish ecological balance into the future.
I suggest adopting the model for the protection of Gwaii Haanas (South Moresby): A National Park Reserve. It is a comprehensive co-management agreement between the Council of the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada. It has worked wonderfully on Haida Gwaii, bringing both economic benefits and enlightened protection of both nature as well as Haida culture.
Sincerely yours,
