Kick us while we’re down

Sure, kick us while we’re down. Isn’t a 43 per cent increase in our water bill a bit steep when so many people are out of work, small businesses are closing, etc.? Why should we pay so much more for water, when the SCRD is not getting us any more water? About a month after the payment deadline for “water use” they’ll be telling us how much (or rather little) and when we’re allowed to use it.

And whatever happened to the water meter idea? People should pay for how much they use. I am one old lady living in a small house. I’m conscientious with my water use, I usually do one load of laundry a week, and start my dishwasher every three to four days when it’s full. Why should I pay the same as a big family in a big house, with the dishwasher going once or twice a day, many loads of laundry per week, teenagers taking 20 minute showers, etc.? During the recent spell of good weather there was also a frenzy of pressure washing that went on for hours on end. In a pandemic, is it really that important if there’s some mildew on your house siding or pine needles in your driveway?

This year we will need more water than ever, what with the constant hand washing and extra cleaning. We’ve had less than normal rainfall for this time of year, but when it does rain, it’s disheartening to see it all just wash down the creeks and ditches and into the ocean. It’s time the SCRD found a way to store this water. They’ve had many years to figure it out. Get on with it.
