In celebration of teachers

What comes to mind when you think about the word teacher?

Is it someone in a classroom who stands at the front of a room at a chalkboard instructing students? Is it someone who passes on knowledge and skills through education or sport? Is it someone who is just there, someone to listen to and someone to pass on advice?

In our eyes, teaching is about any and all these criteria - and so much more. A teacher is a caring role model who, on more than one occasion, puts other people's needs ahead of their own - in most cases, the needs of children.

On Tuesday, Oct. 5, World Teachers' Day was recognized with probably little fanfare. We suspect that not too many people know there is a World Teachers' Day. And if they did, did they show their gratitude for teachers?

In B.C. and here on the Sunshine Coast in School District No. 46, we are fortunate to have teachers who are mentoring and shaping a new generation of leaders.

They provide leadership in our classrooms and in our gyms, in our music rooms and wood shops, in our arenas and sports fields. Our Sunshine Coast teachers do so much more than just teach in the classroom. Every day, through their work, they put students first.

This year, World Teacher's Day is being celebrated with the song "You Have Made a Difference." Teachers continue to make a difference, one child at a time, and we encourage everyone to join in honouring the energy and enthusiasm that Sunshine Coast teachers bring to their students each day. Take a moment to thank your teachers for all they do.

Cage funding

After years of hard work and fundraising, the Gibsons Minor Ball Association (GMBA) had an indoor training facility that they could utilize for years to come. Now, because of the new RCMP station set to be built on land near the Gibsons and Area Community Centre, the cage has to be rebuilt and relocated, but that takes more money - money the GMBA doesn't have. You can help this cause by voting in the Aviva Community Fund Competition, a nation-wide competition by which the highest per capita votes for a project will get funding. It's as easy as clicking this link - www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf5902 - and registering to vote.

Do your part and help this worthy organization. Step up and vote to help the GMBA and Town of Gibsons band together to continue to help our Coast athletes strive for success.
