Editor:
In response to Cecilia Ohm-Eriksen’s Letter to the Editor (“Weapons ban commended,” May 22) I would like to point out that the guns used in the Nova Scotia shootings were not registered and therefore are considered illegal simply by their registration status. These guns would not be affected by the recent gun legislation, as only legal and registered firearms are covered. Basically all illegal firearms will not be recovered as they “do not exist” in any government database, only the legally acquired and registered firearms of law-abiding citizens will be affected.
Secondly, the comment “trumps democratic process” has a very troublesome ring to it. Canada was created on the democratic process, and I am not in favour of overriding this and falling into a dictatorship bypassing the principles established in 1867. Ignoring the House of Commons is not what this country needs!
