Heartbreaking destruction

Letters

Editor:

Last year, some people thought it would be “fun” to break in to the Gibsons school greenhouse garden, break many tomato plants and throw them and the fruit all over the garden and road.

It seems this year, despite those people being caught and having to do a restorative justice project for the garden, someone else also believes that destroying the hard work of the community is their right. Wednesday night, April 22, someone, once again, broke into the greenhouse and destroyed newly planted vegetables destined for community consumption.

That garden is not a decoration. That garden feeds people. That garden only happens because community members step up and do the work to keep the site clean, build the soil, rear the seedlings at home, transplant them to the greenhouse and garden, weed them, water them and then make them available to members of the community who may be in need of food.

This, in a time of great strife for humans and the plea to stay at home. Someone is obviously NOT staying at home.

In addition to the vandalism, there was an obscene, threatening note left behind.

This is heartbreaking for those who put in the work and heartbreaking for those who may have to go without food because of this. Also heartbreaking that such a selfless and giving contribution to our community should be so senselessly destroyed, and for what purpose?
