There was a landmark decision made at the Gibsons council meeting of Oct. 16.
Putting aside the name calling, misinformation, disrespect and rudeness directed primarily at three members of council at the Oct. 11 public hearing on Gospel Rock, council made some important amendments to the Gospel Rock neighbourhood plan: there will be no waterfront development and the concerns over access, density and aquifer capacity will be reviewed within five years.
Disregarding the open hostility and abusive behavior of some members of both our own community as well as adjoining areas, council made decisions on what was best for the Town of Gibsons.
Some members of the community remarked on Facebook and elsewhere that "We won!" They are absolutely correct - the Town of Gibsons and all its residents did win. This was not a case of one side versus another; our town council made this a win-win for everyone, something that no one could have foreseen in the months leading up to this decision.
Let's make sure to give all members of this council a pat on the back for a job extremely well done.
We would like to suggest that the first act of healing the divisions in our community would be a sincere apology from the citizens who behaved so badly during the process which brought us to this positive outcome in the saga of Gospel Rock. You know who you are, and it is the least you could do.
