Close call with boat trailer

Letters

Editor:

A few weeks ago, I was riding my bike in the 8200 block of Redrooffs, heading towards Sechelt. The road at that point was uphill and narrow, with a blind curve at the top. On my right was a bit of a grassy verge, and then a steep bank. There was a vehicle coming up behind me, and an oncoming car in the other lane. I could see that both vehicles would be passing me at the same time, leaving the overtaking vehicle no room to manoeuvre in order to pass me safely.

The overtaking vehicle, an SUV, just managed to squeeze by me, but it took me a split second to realize he was pulling a boat. I had just enough momentum to quickly pull over onto the verge, as the boat, wider than the SUV, passed me.

A pedestrian, who witnessed the situation unfold, told me that the boat had missed me by about a hand width.

Please, drivers pulling trailers – be extra cautious when passing cyclists. Add just a few seconds to your day to pass safely. No one wants to add “I knocked a cyclist off the road with my trailer” to their day.
