Re: "Private property a Hopkins amenity" (Coast Reporter, Aug. 31).
As the administrator of Hopkins Landing Waterworks District and resident for more than 60 years, I would like to clarify a couple of statements regarding the Aug. 31 article.
The path in question is owned by and registered to the Hopkins Landing Waterworks District (HLWWD) not to myself, Gloria Fyles. It is regulated by bylaws (no vehicles, bicycles, structures, camping, etc.). There are no boat ramps as dinghies and canoes are pulled up to the edge of the path.
We are definitely not an "obsolete utility company." Being an improvement district, we are governed by Victoria and managed by a board of five trustees, all residents. We have our own wells and two 50,000-gallon water tanks to service upwards to 200 homes. Our taxes and tolls are paid directly to the HLWWD and are collected by the administrator, a name given to me by the provincial government. We look after our own infrastructure and have excellent piping, electrical and technical skills amongst our trustees, all volunteers.
We protect the front path for the use of Hopkins' residents, their families and friends, hopefully for many generations to come. We do not stop anyone from walking along and enjoying this wonderful area, providing they respect the fact that it is privately owned. And please, visitors and residents alike, clean up after your dogs.
