I recently was visiting a friend and noticed a row of Himalayan balsam, also known as policeman's helmet, in her garden. She told me she bought a package of wildflower seeds from a local store and that the seeds came on a strip. This might explain the sudden appearance of this invasive plant in local gardens.
I have contacted the company and they have promised to look into it. I don't believe the company was aware when they sourced the seeds that the package contained an invasive. These plants are wildflowers in Asia.
I would strongly urge anyone who has purchased wildflower seeds to familiarize themselves with this plant and eradicate it as it is going to seed right now. It is quite possible that many other companies may have this mix as well.
