Special Olympics Sunshine Coast, Gibsons basketball team, hosted its third tournament on Jan. 26 at Elphinstone Secondary School. Two teams from North Vancouver travelled to the Coast to play the teams from Gibsons and Sechelt.

A record 36 teams took to the ice last weekend at the Gibsons Curling Club for the annual men's bonspiel. There were 29 teams from the Lower Mainland, two from Vancouver Island and five local rinks.

The Elphinstone bantam girls' basketball team recorded the first two wins of the season by defeating Chatelech at home and Brooks in Powell River. In the home game Jan. 15, the Cougars jumped to a 12-0 lead en route to a 41-21 victory.

After a long winter break the U13 Thunder Girls Rep soccer team took to the field last weekend against Marpole, one of the top teams in their gold division. The teams played to a 1-1 tie keeping Thunder in top spot in the division.

More than 800 hockey fans crammed into the Gibsons and Area Community Centre last Saturday night for an entertaining evening and to support a great cause.

Some of the top senior men's curlers from around the province called Gib-sons home last weekend for the B.C. region 11 Lower Mainland provincial qualifier.

Sechelt's Kimberly Pluess has joined the growing list of Coasters who have made it big in the competitive body building world.

The Elphinstone senior boys put in a strong showing, going 3-0 to win their own Cougar Classic last weekend in Gibsons. Elphi started the tournament on Friday afternoon with an 88-63 win over their Coast rivals from Chatelech.

Needing a win to stay at the top of the league standings, the U14 rep Scorpions travelled to Vancouver to face the Titans and picked up that win 2-1.

The accolades continue to pour in for Roberts Creek's Kyla Richey after a wonderful career with the University of British Columbia women's volleyball team, which won five national championships.
