Universities benefit from Coast talent

Former Sunshine Coast athletes continue to make great strides at the university level. Roberts Creek's Will Gye is in his first year of eligibility with the University of Victoria men's soccer team. Last year he played for the Capilano College Blues.

Former Sunshine Coast athletes continue to make great strides at the university level.

Roberts Creek's Will Gye is in his first year of eligibility with the University of Victoria men's soccer team. Last year he played for the Capilano College Blues. Gye has a goal and an assist for UVic that holds a record of 6-2-1 on the season. Their next games are this weekend against Trinity Western and Fraser Valley.

At Simon Fraser Uni-versity, Roberts Creek's Brianna Kane is in her second year with the cross country and track and field team. Kane recently helped lead the SFU women's team to a third place finish at the Sundodger Invitational Meet at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Fellow Creeker Shaun Stephens-Whale is also in his second year of cross country and track at the University of British Columbia. He finished 52nd overall and helped lead the men's team to a fourth place finish at the Sundodger.

On the volleyball court, the defending Canadian champion UBC women's team, led by Creekers Kyla Richey and Natalie Eades, just wrapped up their exhibition season where they posted a record of 2-5 including splitting four games at last weekend's West Coast Classic at UBC. Eades has registered 17 kills in 15 games played so far while Richey has 28 kills in 12 games played so far.

UBC opens up conference play against the University of Alberta Pandas on Oct. 17 at War Memorial Gym at UBC.
